NOVEMBERS DOOM Hamartia
HotChicago based doom/death metal veterans are back with the 10th studio album of their carreer, and as always my expectations are quite high since we're talking about a band that very rarely disappoint their fans. We could hear a slight change of direction on their 2014 album 'Bled White' and it's even more obvious this time around. It still sounds unmistakable Novembers Doom, but where the earlier albums were death metal with doom elements it's more the other way around now. The death metal elements are still there, just less dominant than before. When it comes to Paul Kuhr's vocals he has always been one of my favorite growlers, and that's still the case after having spent a few hours with this new album. However, on 'Hamartia' he deliver both growling and clean singing, and the clean vocals are more present than ever before on this album. So does it work? Yes it does, it brings more contrast and excitement to the songs and as long as he dosen't get tempted to take an Åkerfeldt twist leaving the growling behind I'm quite happy with it. The song material is once again very strong and again presented in an organic production, so I'm sure Nobembers Doom fans wil receive 'Hamartia' with open arms.
