Every now and then when listening through loads of new albums you’re in for a big surprise when you least expect it, and that was certainly the case when I first heard this debut album from Atlanta, Georgia based Paladin. Stylistically we’re talking a blend of power metal, thrash and melodic death metal, nothing unique actually but what separates ‘Ascension’ from the masses is the freshness and raw energy alongside a superb song material. Great guitar work both in respect of riffs, harmonies and leads really adds that little extra to the material. On the vocal side both high pitch clean and harsh growling vocal styles are used and the mixture works perfectly well. The album clocks in on just under 50 minutes and every single one of the eleven tracks are premium quality. I would easily recommend ‘Ascension’ to fans of power metal as well as the thrash and melodic death metal hordes out there. Simply a superb debut.
