Following up their last epic opus 'The Astonishing' Dream Theater seems to be moving in the opposite direction for this new one with a heavier and more back to the roots approach. My first impression of 'Distance Over Time' wasn't too overwhelming, and it actually took me quite a few spinnings to really get into the material, but eventually my patience paid off and by now I would probably say it's their best album since 'Metropolis Pt. 2 - Scenes From A Memory'. The music is very much guitar driven this time and Petrucci has for sure delivered some of his best work to date here and the allover energy of the music proves that the whole band has really enjoyed themselves during the recording process. 'Distance Over Time' is probably one of the more accessible Dream Theater albums with it's more in-your- face approach and shorter songs (well, shorter in terms of Dream Thater doesn't necessarily mean short though), but destpite this the complexity and the unparalleled musicianship of each member of course remains very intact and it still sound unmistakeable Dream Theater. The production is crystal clear and open, but yet very powerful and focused and in that respect 'Distance Over Time' is probably the best sounding DT album to date. All ten tracks are premium quality but if I should dare to pick a personal favorite right now I would say 'Barstool Warrior'. All in all an excellent return from the undisputed kings of progressive metal.
