GRAVESPELL Frostcrown

San Diego, California based Gravespell are back with their sophomore album to follow up their 2013 debut 'Gaia Terminus'. Their style is a mixture of technical death metal and black metal, inspired by Norwegian black metal acts such as Emperor and Windir as well as bands from the melodic and technical side of the death metal genre. The material on 'Frostcrown' is aggressive with a technical twist, but also very melodic and atmospheric. The album has a bit of the same magic, enthralling atmosphere that we know from classic Vintersorg albums even though Gravespell's music itself doesn't have too much in common with the the Swedes. The song material is incredible strong throughout the entire album with really tastefull gitarwork both when it comes to riffs, hamonies and lead parts. Behind the wall of drums, bass and guitars lies a quite simple but very effective layer of keyboards that without beeing too dominant contributes a lot to the all over atmosphere. The vocals are definitely more death metal than black metal, but it contains elements of both genres and it works very well over this material. Gravespell may not bring anything new to the table, but still they have succeeded in creating an exciting album that really captivates the listener from start to end. Highly Recommended.
