STRYPER Fallen
HotI must admit that Stryper is one of those bands that I used to like in my younger days, but seem to have forgotten about for the past couple of decades. I remember their mid eighties releases as good stuff though, especially 'Soldiers under command' and 'To hell with the devil'. That means I do not know much about their later albums, and therefore I didn't quite know what to expect from their new effort which by the way is the eleventh in line of studio albums. Fortunately 'Fallen' happened to be a very pleasent surprise. It's pretty straight forward meldoic hard rock/heavy metal with strong melodies, atmospheric arrangements and a very good production. Michael Sweet does an excellent job on vocals and I really like the tasty guitar leads on 'Fallen' as well. The material is a fine mix of up-tempo and mid-tempo stuff and of course there's a nice little power ballad as well in the epic 'All over again'. There's also a quite different but nice cover version of Black Sabbath's 'After forever' on the album. Some may claim that there are thousands of bands out ther sounding just like this and that may be true, but on the other hand you can never change the fact that in the end it all comes down to the quality of the songs - and that's exactly what makes 'Fallen' an album well worth checking it out.
